Explore Galle countryside on bikes.. the cycle routes pass lush green paddy fields, local villages, electric blue kingfishers, brilliant white egrets, big black buffaloes, inland lakes, tea gardens, and cinnamon fields. Stop en route for a thambili (king coconut) served under an ambalama.
The Paddy Trail (Distance 12km, Duration 1.5 hours)_ The trail starts and finishes in Unawatuna. It passes through Eluvila Bird Sanctuary and into paddy fields by sticking on village roads and quiet lanes.
The Paddy and Lake Trail (Distance 26km, Duration 2.5 hours)_ An extended version of trail 1 and includes a beautiful section alongside the shoreline of Koggala Lake and its cinnamon plantations.
The Hiyare Hill Climb (Distance 41km, Duration 4 hours)_ A more challenging route with a climb to the pristine Hiyare Lake nature reserve before descending past the paddy fields and Koggala Lake back to Unawatuna. For this trail a start between 7 to 8 AM is recommended.
The bicycles are mostly imported lightweight aluminium hardtail mountain bikes with shimano parts but we also have a range of upright bikes, ladies step through bikes, kids bikes, some electric bikes and even baby seats available.
We would recommend trainers, shorts and a T-shirt to cycle in but if you’re comfortable cycling in flip flops as our guides are then they are fine. No shirtless cycling please.
