Lying within the precincts of the Sacred City of Anuradhapura, the Sri Maha Bodhiya or Sacred Bo Tree is one of the most hallowed sites of pilgrimage in Sri Lanka and is venerated by Buddhists the world over.

Of particular significance is that it was grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. The cutting was brought to Sri Lanka by Sangamitta Theri, the sister of Arahat Mahinda in the 3rd Century BC, and planted by King Devanampiyatissa on an elevated terrace. Since the original tree in Bihar is no more, and the Sri Maha Bodhi is believed to be the oldest tree in the world with a recorded history, it holds deep significance to those of the Buddhist faith.

Throughout history, the tree has been nurtured and protected by a string of guardians and has survived multiple invasions and conflicts. Today, a golden fence protects the sacred tree preserving it for generations to come.
