Nilaveli Beach
Nilaveli beach is a peaceful unspoilt beach perfect for relaxing in the sun. Calm shallow waters near Pigeon Island is ideal for swimming & snorkeling.
The main city on Sri Lanka’s eastern seaboard, Trincomalee lies on one of the best natural deep water harbours in the world. With a deep history going back to the times of great Dravidian dynasties, its strategic importance has made it a coveted possession throughout colonial times changing hands from the Portuguese, to the Dutch and then to the British, who defended it against air raids by Japan during World War 2.
One of five ancient Ishawarams dedicated to Lord Shiva, its existence can be traced back to before 400BC, and is referred to in historical texts as the Kailash of the South.
Pigeon Island is located north of Trincomalee, and specifically in near Nilaveli beach. Activities here include surfing, whale watching and diving tours.
Fort Fredrick was completed in 1624 & is a protective monument in remarkably good condition that dates back to the Portuguese colonial period.
