Muhudu Maha Vihara gets its name from the beachfront property on which it has been built. Some legends also attest it to be Kirinda, the supposed landing site of Princess Vihara Devi, although this is contested too and the whole legend might be just a mythologized detail. What remains of the monastic complex consists of an image house. The foundations are brick with stone pillars. Three statues remain, a pair of Bodhisattvas and a Buddha image.
