Elephant Freedom Project is a shelter for captive elephants. Currently, there are two elephants, named Kumari and Menike, at this small family-run shelter. In this animal-friendly activity the elephants take you on a close to 2-hour walk, the itinerary is planned by them and your guide will explain their social behavioral cues. Next, you would give them a nice scrub down for close to one hour.
The Elephants are two retirees from the tourism industry after having labored for many years. No Elephant riding… If you’re looking at an elephant riding experience, then this is the wrong excursion for you. There are many tourist traps in Sri Lanka and elephant riding is one such trap. The animals are chained and treated badly to help travelers take souvenir photographs.
The shelter is located close to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and is a recommended alternative if you prefer a non-touristy & calmer experience with elephants.
Daily there are two sessions operated and the maximum group size per session is 15 persons. For this activity, children are considered between 2 to 18 years and enjoy a 50% discount.
You have the option to cancel your booking and receive a full refund if you do so at least 24 hours before the experience’s scheduled start time. However, please note that if you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded. Additionally, accepting any changes made to the booking less than 24 hours before the start time will be at the discretion of our excursion partner. Please be aware that the cut-off times for cancellations and changes are based on the local time (IST) of the experience.

You should bring your sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent, a small water bottle and suitable shoes for walking. For the washing, do bring a towel and an extra set of clothes as you may get wet. On rainy days, remember to bring your umbrella!
During the rainy season there may be leeches. If you're travelling during this period, wear long pants and sleeves and sock and closed shoes. Apply insect repellent and tuck your pants into your socks.
