Once a sleepy fishing village frequented by die hard surf fans and dominated by hippie culture, Hikkaduwa is now one of the country’s most popular beach destinations amongst young travellers. Set amidst a bustling sprawl of hotels, guest houses, pubs and bars, Hikkaduwa beach offers an upbeat environment with plenty of entertainment and nightlife. Pub culture is the norm here and the beach really comes alive in July or August when an annual three day beachfest is held featuring international DJs pounding out the tracks to keep hundreds of revellers entertained. Its old ties to surfing are not lost, with the sport still popular and many rental outfits provide necessary gear. The reef offshore offers excellent snorkeling and diving, but if you prefer to keep your feet dry then an excursion in a glass bottomed boat would be the best option.
