The Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary lies near Tangalle and is a wetland system comprised of a brackish water lagoon and mangrove swamps. Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is an important breeding and nesting ground for a large number of resident and migratory species, Kalametiya is one of the few places where the endangered Indian reef heron and glossy ibis can be found. The other species common within the sanctuary include the painted snipe, clamorous reed warbler, common redshank, little pratincole, and the ruddy turnstone. Of migratory species found here, pintail and garganey are the most numerous.
