Just outside of Weligama, Mirissa beach is a blissfully secluded stretch of beach lying in a small bay in the South of Sri Lanka. Largely noncommercial, the pace here is slow and mainly serviced by a few homely and rustic guest houses offering excellent hospitality. Mirissa beach is a recognised hotspot for whale watching in Sri Lanka and the types of whales that grace the Southern waters of Sri Lanka include Blue Whales, Fin Whales, Bryde’s whales, Sperm Whales. In addition to whales you can also spot pods of dolphins as well. The whale watching season is from December to April and many operators offer boat excursions out of the small fishing harbour in the bay.
