Located between the towns of Chilaw and Puttalam, the Nawadankulama Tank is a large man-made water body that attracts an abundance of waterfowl and waders, both resident and migratory. Common resident species observed here include purple and grey herons, purple coot, cotton teal, whistling teal, and cormorants, while the main migratory species found here are pintail and garganey. The scrub jungle surrounding the tank is the southern most domain of the collared dove and Indian grey partridge, while other species here include the white-bellied sea eagle, grey-headed fish eagle, crested hawk eagle, golden-backed woodpecker, blue-faced malkoha and brown fish owl.
